American psychological association is the prominent organisation in the field of psychology. The interesting fact is that lion share of the researches in the field of psychology are from Europe and North America. Encroachment of the American model of psychology into other countries psychological disciplines becomes a major area of concern. It may be due to an intellectual void. Cultural factors are highly sensitive when it comes to the arena of psychology. For example until the entry of revolutionary government in Cuba, psychology domain of Cuba was dominated by American model. It specialised in industrial and commercial psychology. But after the entry of revolutionary government psychology shifted its work arena more ‘people centred welfare’ psychology where the service of psychology was even available in primary health centres. Also extensive researches were spearheaded in the area of psychology. Cuban psychology flourished under this purely ‘ethnic’ psychology which raises a lot of question on the importance of cultural variables in the field of psychology.
Psychology was always contributing to health provided with the fact that treating mental illness, promoting positive psychology etc are indeed contributions to health. But beyond psychological and medical interventions what all psychology has done to health? There is indeed less intervention in the socio cultural aspects of health. It is here health psychology have got a greater role to play. Even then someone can argue that psychology does contribute to the socio cultural aspects of health. Then here comes the next question, what was and is the role of psychology for the marginal and socially excluded communities around the globe? Does psychology raised their voices against social and economic inequalities? How does psychology defines power relations with respect to all this types of discrimination? These questions could be answered with the exploration of community psychology.
