We reached Ananya’s residence the day after. As expected the house was adorned with lights. A tent was placed in front of the place. My heart began to race very fast as we walked inside through the open front gate. Thankfully there were not many guests around. As my eyes took a second to look for a familiar face, I had a weird feeling as if we were making the remake of DDLJ. Then I got sight of her! She was looking stunning in an orange saree. I will never forget that expression on her face for the rest of my life. It was like her heart had beaten after a very long time. As if she was also dead without me. At that moment I realized that she loved me as much as I loved her. I promised myself to leave no rock unturned but I will not let this marriage happen.

It is not hard to guess what happened after that. Within half a minute the entire family gathered in the vicinity. I spotted Ananya’s father who was walking towards us with a fury in his eyes. I indicated to my dad that this was him. Before uncle could as much open a mouth my father spoke. I knew he was a good orator but I have never heard him speak with so much of determination and calmness in his tone. He folded his hands and introduced himself to uncle. “Namaste Bhaisahab, I am Pankaj Kapur, Tejas’ father. I am extremely sorry to have come uninvited like this. I would also like to apologize for all the inconvenience my son has given to you in the past.” Hearing all this I felt a sudden lump in my throat. I never had seen him apologize to anyone before. I was about to interrupt but he continued “Ananya is a lovely girl. I have known her for over a year now and it is hard not to like such a person. I know I should have come to you sooner but my work has kept me busy. I know how hard it is to raise a child and she being your only daughter does not make it any easier. Just like any father you want what is best for her and you have every right to select her groom for her. I am not saying that my son is the best guy you can find for her but I can assure you that I will not get a better daughter-in-law for my family. Whatever little time I have spent with her, she made me realize what I was losing in my life. She taught me the importance of family and love and I would always be grateful to her for giving me my son back.”

Right at that moment my eyes met Ananya’s and I saw my tears being reflected in her own eyes. Yes, I have never thanked her enough for all that she has given me. I loved her very much but I could not watch my father bow down before anyone like that, even for me! Before I could think, I spoke ‘Please dad’.  Automatically I looked into his eyes and I saw the same pain as I had seen in Ananya’s. He put a hand over my shoulder and continued addressing Ananya’s father.  “Bhaisahab, today’s generation is quite fast. They prefer to choose their own partner and I respect this courage in them. I come here today not as a businessman but as a poor father to ask for your daughter’s hand for my son. I don’t want anything else, just the happiness of these children”.
